Hard Core

This is an important theme that Peter talks about. Here in Seattle, As we come to understand Christianity, when we talk about love, peace and power all are mostly on same page. When we talk about truth, there comes the problem.

Peter essentially explains what a Christ follower is; in a sense it is a new relation to truth. As a Christ follower there is a coherent truth to be understood. The reason there is a problem; in the modern, western world there is a non-coherent truth. Sartre said, “Everything is permitted if God does not exist, and man is consequence forlorn, for he cannot find anything to depend upon either within or outside himself…morals are for us both unavoidable and impossible.”

He is right, if there is no God morals are impossible, yet we find in this world morals are unavoidable. I respect Penn Jilette because I think he is thoughtful and a believer in what he believes. He wrote an article called, “There is no God,” In the article he makes moral statements like “I’m not greedy…I’m not rude.” He says, “this I believe, I believe there is no God.”

He is affirming what Sartre said. How can he say what greed is or rudeness is? Isn’t he making the assumption that people should know better than to be rude or greedy? Why should they know? Because there is a truth that they should know, it’s outside of them not inside. We have a problem. The idea of truth, morals, right and wrong are unavoidable yet impossible in the modern world today.

Here’s what a Christ follower should ask, why is it that when we are in touch with ultimate reality that we sense there is a final truth that is imposed? We may not believe in ultimate truth, we sense that it is there? Why is it unavoidable and et impossible? It keeps breaking through because its there.

Peter shows us two things about this truth, 1. it’s found in the bible but 2. its a person.
