What We Say In Life Echoes In Eternity

Chapter 3 begins with James showing us the seriousness of words. Right after that we see that words are not only serious, they are the key to mastery in your life. If you can master your words, you can master your whole life.

There is nothing worse than middle aged men whose kids are playing sports. I have spent the last 3 years listening to guys my age and older saying the most horrendous things to kids, refs and each other. I have seen fights and grown men yelling and cussing like sailors. The tongue uncontrolled can slice up someone’s self-image, destroy a dream, shatter a relationship.

The ability to control words is the mark of self-mastery. In chap 1 James says, be quick to listen and slow to speak. In 1:26 – “hold your tongue…” Wreckless words and untamed tongues end friendships, destroy marriages and ruin relationships between child and parent and siblings, spiritual maturity is seen by thinking before speaking.
