Suffering + Angst = Greatness?
This passage tells us about Jesus and his loyal band of followers in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus has asked them to pray with him as he begins the end of his life and ministry. Jesus is in anguish over what is going to happen. It is interesting that the Father has given Jesus a glimpse of the hell he is about to endure. Jesus is scared and shaken, his angst his heightened. In the account as told by Luke, we see Jesus sweat drops of blood. For the first time in Jesus' life we see him shocked, rattled as it were.
The story is amazing as Jesus goes to the Father three times asking that this "cup" be taken away from him. Three different times Jesus asks the father to change the mission. As Jesus is feeling this anguish, he discovers that his friends are asleep and he appears to be agitated by this. Jesus is alone. He is scared. He is lost.
